23 farmer-enrollees graduate in a 4-month FBS

Selected SoA enrollees who are members of the Buluan-RIC demonstrated longanisa processing  after the FBS  graduation.


After completing the four-month Farmers Business  School (FBS), 23 farmer-enrollees composed of one male and 22 females finally graduated in Buluan, Conner, Apayao last July 3.


The graduates who are all members of the swine processing and meat processing livelihood interest groups (LIGs) under the Buluan Rural Improvement Club (RIC) displayed their finished products like longanisa, etag, puto, siopao, taro chips and banana chips as evidences of their successful four months training.


“These are good  results - solid evidences- of your four months training. With your presentations, I am very convinced that you have, indeed, learned a lot during the FBS,” exclaimed Provincial Agriculturist Mr. Prudencio Bosing. He also revealed that to further support the farmer-assisted groups like LIGs and to sustain what the Project has started, the municipal local government of Conner is planning to establish a processing center by 2019.


Provincial Coordination Officer Ms. Digna Villanueva, on the other  hand, explained that the five modules introduced in the FBS aimed  to further prepare the LIGs at becoming more  capable in handling their growing businesses including their Livelihood Assistance Funds from the CHARMP2. “As entrepreneurs, this kind of training prepares you in coping with the challenges of life like climate  change and poverty crises,” she added.


Selected graduates also shared their learning experiences from the FBS. Ms. Elizabeth Sison, bookkeeper of the meat processing LIG, shared that the FBS was not boring and that they learned much during their field visit in the Tuguegarao market, as part of the FBS, to witness  how livestock were brought at the slaughter house for inspection and how these were marketed in the market. Apart from that, they were able to observe how to properly deal with costumers, how to package and label finished products, and how to process meat into longanisa.


The graduates were also encouraged to continue learning and hone  their skills. This, accordingly, will benefit not only their families but their community and help boost their local economy.


Selected finished products of these CHARMP2-assisted LIGs were displayed during the Agro-Trade Fair in Luna, Apayao, host province for this year’s Cordillera Day celebration.//Janice B. Agrifino
