The hope re-awakens in Bagong, Sablan

t was November 6, 2012 at exactly 8:40 in the morning when the conduct of actual survey of Duyot-Bagong Farm to Market Road was conducted in Bagong, Sablan, Benguet. The team was composed of the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) of Sablan, Benguet particularly the Office of Municipal Project Development Office (MPDO) headed by Engr. Nicomedes L. Caliging, two (2) staff from the Municipal Engineering Office, one (1) Community Mobilization Officer, 5 members of the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) and some of the barangay constituents.

Along the way, we witnessed the hardship of Bagong farmers in transporting their farm produce to La Trinidad Market and Baguio City. The road was opened in 2003 under the DA-CHARM Phase 1 Project but vehicles cannot yet reach the beneficiary barangay due to identified portions that needed to be rehabilitated.

In 2009, re-construction and cementing of critical sections of the road was done under the Congressional Development Fund (CDF) of Benguet. However, during the rehabilitation period, the road experienced consecutive typhoons that caused many landslides and road cuts. Presently the residences of barangay Bagong is one hour walk during night time and 35 minute walk during day from sitio Tulibeng, Balluay.

Most of the local residents that saw the survey team are happy knowing that their farm to market road will be rehabilitated in due time by the CHARM 2 project. With the expected completion of rehabilitation of the road, farmers will save time, effort and money if the vehicle will reach their barangay Bagong, Sablan, Benguet.//Dolores S. Wesley
